FREEDOM CAMPING

Freedom camping in Kaikōura (and New Zealand),is subject to regulations. 

Non-compliant vehicles can expect to be fined in Kaikōura this summer. 

TIPS

Here are some general tips that may help when you travel in a van / campervan:

1.  Check the specific rules and regulations for freedom camping in Kaikōura.

    Local authorities may have designated areas and/or restrictions on camping in certain places.

2. Certified Self-Contained Vehicles

    Vehicles with toilet/waste facilities are the only vehicles allowed to freedom camp to minimize the environmental impact.

3. Respect the Environment and dispose of waste properly.

    Regardless of where you camp, it's important to follow "leave no trace" principles.

4.  Utilise Public Facilities (toilets, dumping stations...) 

     when available and take steps to minimise your impact on the local environment.

5.  Be prepared for changing weather conditions

     It will enhance your camping experience, especially if you plan to camp in more remote areas.

6.  Check for Updates as Regulations and guidelines can change.

     Local information centres, the DOC website, or other official sources can provide the most current information.
